After a week’s break, Chelsea are back to playing football at the highest level as they host minnows Morecambe in the third round of the FA Cup. The break came at the right time for the Blues, as they were in a bad run of form in the Premier League. The players must have now got a good time to look back at what all went wrong in this period. Frank Lampard’s men will have a great chance to put their poor streak behind themselves against Morecambe. Because of the opposition, there will be a lot of rotation in the starting lineup and the matchday squad. The fringe players in the Chelsea squad will surely be a given a chance tomorrow by their manager to show their quality on the pitch. Let us now take a look at how Frank Lampard might set his Chelsea side up in the FA Cup third round against Morecambe.
THE 4-3-3
In the game against Morecambe, Kepa Arrizabalaga is very likely to get a rare start in the Blues shirt after the arrival Mendy. The Spaniard is reportedly looking for a move away with Chelsea wanting the same, but he is still to play in between the sticks. The centre-back pairing of Rudiger and Christensen are most likely to start as Zouma and Silva have played a football in the recent past. Jorginho hasn’t played a lot of football this season after the emergence of N’Golo Kante, who has come back to his best. Young starlet Billy Gilmour is also someone who is ready to show Lampard what he is made of, after returning from a long spell in the sidelines. Pulisic is a doubt for the game as he has had a lot of injuries and Lampard won’t risk him. The front-three of Chelsea will be a nightmare for Lampard to select as Ziyech is slowly recovering from his injury and Werner looks lost.
THE 4-2-3-1
The 4-2-3-1 is another option for Frank Lampard if he wants to give his side more solidity in the midfield zone. This system will also the full-backs more license to bomb forward and join their respective wingers in attack. Jorginho generally plays with either of Kovacic or Kante, and Kovacic is more likely to start as Kante has played almost every game for Chelsea lately. Kai Havertz hasn’t played the way he would have liked to at the beginning of his Chelsea career despite his hefty price tag. He might get a start in a Chelsea shirt in his favourite No.10 position, where he thrives. Tammy Abraham is most likely to lead the line for Chelsea and will look to get his place back in Chelsea’s starting XI in the Premier League.
THE 3-4-3
The only other option and system Lampard has used at Chelsea is the 3-4-3 but he has only used it against sides that possess good attackers. It is unlikely for him to go for this formation against Morecambe as they are the minnows in this game. Chelsea should win this game hands down and should use this as an opportunity to launch a good streak of winning games.
