Had no chance with Grimsby Town’s goal and did not have much to do the rest of the game with Chelsea enjoying most of the possession
Reece James 7.5
Showed why he is so highly rated by the Chelsea faithful, was involved in Chelsea’s second goal by making a lovely run and delivering a deflected cross for Batshuayi to score. Played a brilliant improvised cross for Zouma to score Chelsea’s fourth of the night before scoring a long-range goal himself.
Kurt Zouma 8
Enjoyed his role as the senior defender in the Chelsea backline. Did not have much to do defensively but played some good passes and even managed to get in the box to poke home Reece James’ cross.
Marc Guehi 6.5
Wasn’t tested by Grimsby but did not cover himself in glory when he failed to attack McKeown’s goal kick which allowed Green to get in and score a powerful effort.
Marcos Alonso 6.5
Got forward at will and whipped in balls for the Chelsea attackers. Wasn’t tested defensively on the night but freekicks need improving this season.
Billy Gilmour 7
Solid first-team debut for Chelsea’s young midfielder. Played some good passes and never stopped running in the game.
Ross Barkley 9
Probably his best performance in a Chelsea shirt. Went on a great run to open the scoring for Chelsea and would have had at least four assists if not for some wasteful finishing.
Pedro 7.5
Chelsea’s captain on the night and worked hard for the team, dropping deep to receive the ball many times. Steady if not spectacular performance.
Christian Pulisic 6.5
American soccer fans will be worried about Pulisic’s start to his Chelsea career. Was given a chance against Grimsby but failed to impress by putting in an average performance.
Callum Huson-Odoi 8.5
Chelsea fans turned up to watch the return of Chelsea’s young star and were treated by good performance by the 18-year-old. Should have had four but shot straight at the goalkeeper three times before wrapping up Chelsea’s scoring by scoring a well-taken goal late in the game.
Michy Batshuayi 8
Good turn and finish to score his first and Chelsea’s second early in the game. Was wasteful in front of goal before scoring his second with an impressive finish late in the game.
