Chelsea target Djordje Petrovic set to undergo medical in the next 24-48 hours

Djordje Petrovic is scheduled to undergo a medical test at Chelsea in the next 24-48 hours.

The Blues have reportedly reached a £14 million (€16 million) agreement with the New England Revolution for the 23-year-old goalkeeper, according to Sky Sports.

This transfer is expected to be finalized during the week, as Petrovic is set to replace the former Chelsea no.1, Kepa Arrizabalaga, who recently joined Real Madrid on a season-long loan.

Petrovic will be in competition with another summer signing, Robert Sanchez, who arrived at Stamford Bridge from Brighton to contend for the no.1 goalkeeper position this season.

Sanchez has started in Chelsea’s first two Premier League games but has conceded four goals so far. Lucas Bergstrom, currently a backup to Sanchez, may become Chelsea’s third-choice goalkeeper.

Petrovic has built a strong reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in Major League Soccer (MLS) since joining the New England Revolution in 2022. With 48 appearances and 15 clean sheets across all competitions, the 6ft 4in Serbian goalkeeper has proven his abilities.

In the current season, he has featured in 28 games for the New England Revolution, who are currently in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference table of the MLS.

He was voted as the runner-up for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year last season and was also included in the 2023 MLS All-Star team, despite joining midseason and making only 21 appearances.

Chelsea have been linked with various goalkeepers, including Kasper Schmeichel, but they have settled on Petrovic for the role.

If registered by midday on Thursday, the Serbian star could potentially be included in Chelsea’s match-day squad for their upcoming Premier League game against Luton Town on Friday.

Mauricio Pochettino is aiming to secure his first win with the club after a disappointing defeat to West Ham United. Chelsea drew 1-1 with Liverpool in their league opener and lost 3-1 to West Ham, despite the latter playing with 10 men in the second half of the game.

The Blues have been one of the most active clubs in the transfer window, making eight signings, including Christopher Nkunku, Nicholas Jackson, Moises Caicedo, and Romeo Lavia.

If Petrovic finalizes his long-term deal with the club this week, he will become their ninth summer signing.
