Chelsea have faced a significant setback with the injury of key striker Christopher Nkunku, who is expected to be out of action for an extended period.
The French forward had to undergo surgery due to a knee injury sustained during a pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund, as confirmed by the club statement.
The club has not provided a specific recovery timeline, but Nkunku’s absence could extend to around four months.
Initially, reports downplayed the injury’s seriousness, with hopes that the attacker would only miss a few initial matches of the upcoming season.
Nkunku’s transfer to Stamford Bridge, worth £53 million, occurred this summer following an impressive period at RB Leipzig, where he emerged as a top European forward.

During the 2021/22 season, the 23-year-old secured an impressive record of 35 goals and 20 assists, followed by 23 goals and nine assists in the subsequent term.
Notably, Nkunku showcased his talent in pre-season, scoring against Wrexham, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Fulham.
With high expectations for the former Paris Saint-Germain standout to carry his outstanding form into the new season, this latest setback deals a significant blow to Chelsea’s prospects.
In light of Nkunku’s extended absence, the Blues could consider delving into the transfer market to bolster their attacking options.
The club has shown keen interest in securing Juventus’ centre-forward Dusan Vlahovic as a primary target. Juventus are reportedly open to exchanging the Serbian forward for Chelsea’s priority target, Romelu Lukaku.
