Chelsea are closing in on signing Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte on a six-year contract ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Uruguayan international was expected to be on the move to Paris Saint-Germain before Chelsea made a last-ditch attempt to land his signature by meeting the £52 million release clause in the player’s contract.

According to a report from transfer insider Franco Fernandez, it is claimed that the Blues are in pole position to snap up the 22-year-old Sporting man with the agreement between the two clubs expected to be thrashed out as early as next week.
Ugarte’s agent Jorge Chijane has been vocal in his admission that his client will be leaving the José Alvalade Stadium this coming summer with the likes of Liverpool, PSG and Chelsea waiting eagerly in the wings for the highly-rated midfielder.
It is believed that the player’s preference would be to make the move to the Premier League over signing for PSG who were considered as the early frontrunners for Ugarte before Chelsea threw their hat in the ring.
