As reported by Football London, Chelsea has joined the race to sign Liverpool target Enzo Fernandez this summer. His parent club Benfica is set to ask for a fee of around €50 million for his services.
Fernandez became well-known at River Plate, where he spent the first 16 years of his professional life. But this past summer, Benfica signed him from the South American club and further helped him to progress into an elite player.
The Argentine international has made quick work of becoming a crucial player for Benfica. Fernandez has played in each of the Portuguese powerhouses’ games thus far, recording three goals and two assists in 18 outings.
And a number of prestigious clubs, such as Chelsea, Liverpool, and Barcelona, have taken notice of his performances.
After a shaky start to the 2022–23 season, Liverpool will look to strengthen their midfield region next summer. Jordan Henderson has shown signs of lethargy, while James Milner is nearing the end of his professional career. In addition, they are already dealing with the injuries to Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita. The Liverpool board believes that Enzo Fernandez could be the solution to their problems.
Chelsea may need to replace N’Golo Kante or Jorginho, or even both. The two veterans are both in the final year of their respective contracts and have caught Barcelona’s attention. In addition, Kante’s injury problems have forced the blues to consider Fernandez as a long-term replacement
However, it will cost €50 million for the Blaugrana, Liverpool, Chelsea, and other interested parties to get his services.
It will be intriguing to see whether the interested clubs are willing to spend big money to solve their midfield crises this summer.
