Chelsea sacked their under-fire manager Graham Potter a day after the Blues were defeated by Aston Villa in the Premier League game on home soil.
The defeat to Villa left Chelsea 11th in the Premier League table and added to the uncertainty surrounding Potter’s future at Stamford Bridge just six months into his hiring from top flight side Brighton.
A statement from the club’s official website confirmed that the 47-year-old English manager had been relieved of his duties from the Chelsea top job with the club’s ownership wishing Potter the best of luck with his new endeavours.
“Chelsea FC has announced that Graham Potter has departed the club.
“Graham has agreed to collaborate with the Club to facilitate a smooth transition. In his time with the club, Graham has taken us to the quarter final of the Champions League, where we will face Real Madrid. Chelsea would like to thank Graham for all his efforts and contribution and wish him well for the future.”
The rumour mill suggests that the Chelsea board will be swift in their actions to line up a replacement for the outgoing Potter with the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Mauricio Pochettino on their shortlist of candidates.
It is said that Nagelsmann, who was recently axed as the Bayern Munich head coach, is the first choice for the Chelsea ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, but the German is reportedly reluctant to take the job until the summer.
