Chelsea FC would not be able to pose a serious title challenge next season against the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, according to ex-English international John Barnes.
The former Liverpool forward admitted that the Blues have been strengthened by their recent spending spree this summer. Chelsea FC have acquired attacking stalwarts in the form of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech ahead of next season. Moreover, Frank Lampard remains focused upon signing a new left-back and a quality goalkeeper to bolster his current defensive options.
“However, they will become more competitive and get closer to the top two teams in the Premier League with the signings they have made. Signing Ziyech, Werner and potentially more is clearly a strong indication that Chelsea are there to compete next season.
However, Barnes stated that despite the arrival of new star players at Stamford Bridge, the Blues would find again themselves in a battle for a top-four finish in the upcoming Premier League campaign. According to the 56-year old, Liverpool and Manchester City remain the likely candidates to secure league title glory come next season.
“I definitely feel like Chelsea can challenge for the top four again next season, but I don’t necessarily think they can challenge Manchester City and Liverpool just yet.
Frank Lampard will be hoping that his spending this summer does bear some fruits for his side come next season. The Chelsea FC boss has been rampant in the transfer market with the hope of taking the Blues back to their Premier League glory days.
