Former England and Arsenal footballer Paul Merson who is a regular football pundit claimed that Frank Lampard can secure a top-four place in the Premier League he if makes the right signings in the January transfer window.
Three defeats in their last four Premier League games against Manchester City, West Ham and Everton has highlighted some of the flaws that had been forgotten during Chelsea’s seven-match winning run.
But with their transfer ban lifted by CAS, Frank Lampard can consider the possibility of new recruits for the first time and Merson has encouraged him to splash the cash if he wants to deliver a solid first season.
The Blues have already been linked with a host of players in the transfer window but Lampard will be wary of changing the formula that has served him well so far in his Chelsea career.
However, Merson Believes Chelsea are three players short and need to dip into the market if they are to remain in the top four, “They need a center-forward to take the load off Tammy Abraham for a start, He’s done brilliantly but you can’t rely on him alone for the rest of the season.
“I think Olivier Giroud will go. He’s hardly played and isn’t getting any younger. So they will need to replace him. They might need a more experienced center half if Antonio Rudiger isn’t going to be 100 percent for the rest of the season – and they need a left-back as well.”
Abraham has been in fantastic form for the Blues this season and already has 13 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions. While 33-year-old Giroud, whose contract is up in the summer, has only managed to find the back of the net once in seven games.
