According to the latest reports, Premier League giants Chelsea are keeping up their interest in signing Napoli frontman Dries Mertens next season despite Inter Milan inquiring for the Belgian attacker last week.
Dries Mertens has been the talk of the town all across Europe as a number of top clubs are keeping tabs on the 33-year-old forward. Mertens still has to decide his future, with his contract at the Stadio Sao Paolo expiring at the end of June.
Although the Serie A giants are interested to keep ahold of their superstar striker, there is plenty of interest that needs fending off as Chelsea are constantly monitoring Mertens’ situation at the club.
The reports from the Athletic claim that Frank Lampard is eager to lure the Belgian star attacker at Stamford Bridge over the summer to bolster his attack and add some much-needed experience to his attacking line.
With Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Callum Hudson Odoi and Christian Pulisic still under a development period, Lampard is looking to add a forward with experience to compliment his young and exuberant attackers.
Although Mertens has been a top target for Chelsea over the summer, there are reports claiming that Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan have made an approach to sign the Belgian.
Mertens has netted 12 times in 29 appearances for the Partenopei this season but is understood to want a move away from the club to win some silverware before hanging up his boots. Under Frank Lampard’s burgeoning team that is improving, Mertens might want to look for regular football at west London even with Hakim Ziyech arriving at the club in the summer.
