Thomas Tuchel’s brilliant start to his managerial career at Chelsea with a five-match winning streak was stained by hitting a low block at St Mary’s. In the end, Chelsea grinds out a draw with a penalty from Mason Mount but the draw is as good as a loss.
The two points dropped could have easily made a huge difference in our top four aspirations, which still is practically attainable.
The problem Lampard had in this season was a lack of consistent attacking chances. The final third ball movements were predictable and passive. After six games in charge, the club still has instabilities in the attacking third.
This was dealt with by Frank by throwing in as many attacking players under his disposal into the team which eventually led the club to concede the club’s record amount of league goals.
“We will work on it, but you will score goals in any structure and concede then in any structure. The structure is never the problem or the solution. It is always the input of the players, the structure is fluid. You find the spaces where you find the spaces, in different structures, you find different spaces.”
It is quite clear that the team lacks stability and balance between defense and attacking force. It is turning out to be a pick and choose – situation, you either play attacking football and conceding goals, or defensive football scoring none.
Thomas Tuchel with his vast managerial experience is expected to find the solution to this dilemma. The positive takeaway is that Tuchel identifies the problem, Frank Lampard to the end of his spell was in constant denial of this instability. But on the other hand, is well aware of the problem and hopefully devised a plan to counter that.
Chelsea faces Athletico Madrid in the UCL on Wednesday, which is entirely a different challenge, and hopefully, Tuchel gives all the right answers.
“For sure you can pick more offensive players but it is in the moment it is a balanced game. It is about not conceding and also scoring.
“You can be sure we think day and night about scoring and creating chances. We play high up the pitch and given the statistics from the last matches, I know we don’t score enough for the number of touches in the box, the number of shots, the number of chances we’re creating. At this moment, it is a lack of precision, it’s not a lack of opportunities or lack of touches in the box. It is a lack of quality in decision-making.
“I will have to analyze and it is my job to create more or bigger chances.”
“My job is to win games, not to put some expensive guys together.”
