Former Chelsea star Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has reportedly questioned whether some of the youngsters at the club are good enough to make it as regulars after watching the Frank Lampard’s first game in charge.
The Blues were held to a 1-1 draw against Bohemians in Dublin on Wednesday as Frank Lampard kick-started his reign as the new Chelsea manager. The 41-year-old former England midfielder got his Chelsea side into the groove from the start as his team dominated the majority of the game.
But a late equalizer from Eric Molloy meant that Lampard’s first game in charge ended in a draw even though it was only a preseason game.
Although Lampard explained that he is delighted with his team’s performance, former Blue’s striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink had some stinging comments to make. The 47-year-old former Dutchman started off with his criticism and said that the Chelsea stars needed to move the ball quicker, “They lost the ball way too easy, Players were having too many touches, sometimes seven, eight touches and it slows the game down. ‘It will be a lesson for Frank to see players and in a way, it will make his mind up. Moving the ball fast is his idea of how he wants to play the game. The majority of successful teams do move the ball quickly.”
Lampard decided to field quite a few young players to express themselves but Hasselbaink further went on to explain that some of them are not fit enough, “We saw today, especially in the second half, certain players were dwelling a little bit too much on the ball. They didn’t have a solution before they had the ball. It might be that it’s pre-season; it might be that they’re not fit yet and it will come. For some, it might be a little too much. That is for Frank to figure out, who those players are and who he will go further with. That’s why those games are so important.”
