Chelsea Joins Tottenham In Race To Sign Lille’s Jonathan David

Chelsea have now entered the race together with Tottenham Hotspur in the bid to land Jonathan David, Lille’s young goalscorer who notched 26 goals in 47 matches in the previous season.

Adding to this, The Athletic says Chelsea want to increase their options in attack after losing Michael Olise previously, but the Blues will also be selling Armando Broja and Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea’s interest in David has developed mainly to bolster its forward line as currently Nicolas Jackson looks like the only primary striker with manager Enzo Maresca.

Still, Christopher Nkunku should also be able to play in that role now that he is over his fitness worries following a difficult first year in West London.

His departure could pave the way for Armando Broja to depart.

Also in the market for a striker is Tottenham Hotspur, which has never effectively filled the hole left by Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich last summer.

His youthfulness, pace, and uncanny knack for goal-scoring mean Jonathan David is high on the list for Spurs.

Even Chelsea has, according to The Athletic, contacted the representatives of the players with strong interest in acquiring his services.

Currently, David has two years remaining on his contract with Lille, and the French side will look to sell him if they receive a suitable bid by the end of July.

In fact, Lille president Oliver Letang claimed that David might move out this summer.

Along with Chelsea and Spurs, a number of other Premier League clubs have been monitoring his situation, while he’s also been under observation by AC Milan.

Besides his great season for his club, David played the whole 90 minutes for his country earlier this week, in Canada’s debut in the Copa America who faced Argentina.

Over his career at Lille, he has scored 84 goals out of 183 games.

Both Chelsea and Tottenham missed out on the Champions League places last season and are keen to make big additions to their squad this time around.

Both Chelsea and Tottenham are hopeful of an agreement with the striker to bolster their attack for a strong push into the league next season.
