Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea became the first team to hand Manchester City a taste of defeat in the Premier League this season after registering a 2-0 win over Pep Guardiola’s side.
The Blues climbed back into the top 4 as they put on a brilliant defensive display against the Premier League champions on Saturday to claim all three points. Chelsea’s win over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City ended the Spaniard’s undefeated streak which stretched up to 16 games in England’s top flight this season.
Moreover, Chelsea kept their own title hopes alive by sending out a message to other title rivals that almost every club is beatable. Despite dominating and bossing ball possession for major parts of the game, Manchester City was hit by two massive blows from N’golo Kante and David Luiz late in each half.
After failing to convert any of their chances in the first half, Manchester City was hit totally against the run of play. Just at the stroke of half-time Belgian superstar Eden Hazard found himself in some space on the left flank and cut a cross back towards French midfielder N’golo Kante, who produced a tidy finish to give the home side the advantage heading into the break.
Chelsea then began the second period with more intent and confidence, with their tails up, Sarri’s side took the sting out of the game and the contest was officially ended on the 78th minute. David Luiz glanced in a header from a corner to ensure that the West Londoners enjoyed their nights.
A 2-0 win meant that Chelsea moved into fourth place, level on points with Arsenal but ahead on goal difference. The Manchester City loss also meant that Liverpool is now leading the Premier League table with 42 points as City grab onto 2nd with 41 points.
