Chelsea won the women’s Community Shield since 2008. It was the first one to be played at Wembley behind closed doors. The Chelsea manager, Emma Hayes devoted the victory to the supporters who are watching from home.
“We missed the fans. It felt odd to see my team score a goal and hear my own voice and not the crowd behind me,” she said after the victory.
Chelsea FC’s Millie Bright gave her team the lead when she fired a 25-yard stunner into the top corner. The effort gave no chance to the Manchester City goalkeeper than to concede the goal.
“What a player she is,” said Emma Hayes on Millie Bright.
“She has got everything to keep on pushing her career and that goal is to no surprise to anyone in our environment“- praised the Chelsea manager about Bright.
The Blues then went on to seal a victory when the substitute Erin Cuthbert put the last nail on the coffin from a close-range goal. The goal came in the stoppage time which resulted from a good move from Maren Mjelde.
Chelsea sealed the victory with 2-0 as the final scoreline.
“It was a really closely contested game in the first half and both teams had chances. But I think we controlled the game in the second half,’ Hayes said.
“The sending off helped but our quality going forward was the standout. We showed good experience. It was a good professional performance from the team,” she added.
The Chelsea women’s manager said that they fully deserved to win the match and the credit goes to the whole team. Had her team used all the opportunities, they could’ve won by a big margin against Manchester city’s women team.
