The Blues will be ramping up their massive spending in the upcoming summer transfer window with manager Frank Lampard reported being preparing an offer worth £31 million for Brazilian youngster Gerson.
The 23-year old midfielder who now plays for Flamengo in his native country had earlier played for Italian giants AS Roma. The player had transferred to Flamengo from the Serie A side in 2019 after spending the previous season on loan at AS Roma’s Serie A rivals Fiorentina. Gerson’s transfer to Flamengo had made him the most expensive signing made by a Brazilian club for a Brazilian player.
After AS Roma had secured the signing of the then highly ranked youngster Gerson, the player had been tipped for a bright future at the Italian side and was given ample opportunities to prove his worth on the football pitch.
However, the Brazilian failed to adapt to the Italian league and could only garner 28 appearances for AS Roma during his two year stint at the Serie A side. Soon after shipping him off for a season-long loan at Fiorentina, AS Roma decided to sell the player to Flamengo for a sum of £9.9 million.
However, since signing for Flamengo, Gerson has put in an impressive shift in the Brazilian side’s midfield. His performances have made him a target for many top European sides who are willing to shell out huge amounts of money to secure his signing.
The other teams interested in signing the midfield are believed to be Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspurs.
However, Chelsea FC have the key advantage of having considerable funds to continue financing their recent spending spree. The transfer ban imposed on the Blues last season has led to Frank Lampard being able to dip into the transfer market and acquire talented players. Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner are just two of the many signings Lampard hopes to finalize in the coming weeks.
The Blues will spend an amount nearing the region of £31 million to sign Gerson from Flamengo. Such a deal would involve 10% of the stipulated amount paid to Gerson’s former side AS Roma. The Italian side will surely welcome an additional boost to their transfer budget if Chelsea FC manages to sign their former player in the summer.
