Meet Chelsea FC’s Manager Thomas Tuchel, Assistant Managers and Other Staff

The management staff is as important to a club’s success as its players. Along with providing the players with tactics and insights on their gameplay, the management staff is tasked with many more things like motivating the players when they are out of the team, or keep the squad in high spirits when it’s going through a rough phase, results-wise or otherwise.

Two assistant coaches have been accompanied by Thomas Tuchel, the new German manager of Chelsea. The number is quite low-given the change of head coach literally meant the total revamp of the backroom as we have seen during the appointments of Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri, and Frank Lampard.

The two assistants are Arno Michels and Zsolt Lőw along with Benjamin Weber, a data analyst. These three faces have been with Thomas Tuchel for several years now in all the previous clubs where Tuchel managed. The new manager has tried to blend the new faces with the old ones.

#Manager: Thomas Tuchel

Tuchel comes with the experience of managing Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint Germain. He is the 14th manager of Chelsea to replace Frank Lampard in the Roman Abramovich era. Tuchel was available after he was sacked
unexpectedly by PSG inthe last December which the pundit scall as a strategic move.

He was among the three German coaches who played the Champions League semi final and even reached the final. Moreover, he is well accustomed to the German-style and that could help his team’s two struggling German stars- Timo Werner and Kai Havertz. Tuchel ha seven worked with Thiago Silva and Christian Pulisic. Pulisic first came to lime-light under Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund. He is tipped to help Chelsea move up the Premier League table with his experience and possession-based play.

Assistant Coach: Arno Michels

Michels is the oldest as he has been accompanying Thomas Tuchel since the very start. He has been with him since Tuchel’s time at Mainz (2009-14), Borussia Dortmund (2015-17) and PSG (2018-20). Before entering the coaching phase and becoming Tuchel’s right hand, the 53 years old played in the regional divisions of Germany.

Data Analyst: Benjamin Weber

The 37 years old, Benjamin Weber is Tuchel’s video and data analyst and has been with him since the beginning. He has previously worked with Liverpool coach, Jurgen Klopp before joining Tuchel during his stint at Mainz. Since then he has been in Tuchel’s team.

Assistant coach: Zsolt Lőw

He is the youngest out of all as he started to work with Tuchel since Tuchel joined PSG. He has even played as a left-back under Tuchel during the German’s managerial debut at Mainz. Zsolt retired in 2011 to join the Red Bull football machine as youth assistant coach under Adi Hutter at the German club, RB Leipzig. He has even worked with Ralph Hasenhuttl and Ralf Rangnick before joining PSG for Tuchel.

Goalkeeping Coach: Henrique Hilario

Hilario is the fourth manager at Chelsea and has stayed since the arrival of Antonio Conte. He is quite a familiar name as he has worn the blue jersey previously in the legendary Chelsea era. There were doubts about his future when Petr Cech came in to supervise the Chelsea goalkeepers but Tuchel has trusted the process and kept him.

First brought in under Antonio Conte, it is a testament to Hilario’s quality that he is now on his fourth manager at Stamford Bridge.

The goal-keeping issues have been solved lately and no wonder the Portuguese has been working hand-in-hand with Chelsea’s legendary goalkeeper.

Assistant goalkeeping coach : James Russell

Russel has been a Chelsea academy player for six years earlier whose role now is to assist Petr Cech and Hilario and Cech in the goalkeeping department.

Russel has the duty to keep Mendy, Caballero and Kepa in their paces at training sessions. He is a key part of the staff.

Will Tullett: Fitness coach

Tullet is the key figure of the Chelse club whose responsibility to keep the fitnesses of the players in check. Tullet, a Professional Doctorate in Elite Performance, Movement Development, has been at the club since 2003. He has spent three years in Spain after joining the medical department of the Blues. Lampard promoted him as a fitness coach from a sports scientist of the first team.

Although Jodi Morris and Chris Jones have left the Blues as soon as Frank Lampard was sacked, there are still names that are familiar at the club. Anthony Barry and Joe Edwards are the first team coaches who are still present and led Chelsea before Tuchel’s appointment.
