Conor Gallagher had pulled off the field early against Brentford on Wednesday night, adding to Chelsea’s injury concerns. The midfielder’s availability will be crucial for the blues as they face a tough test against Manchester United.
After only 16 minutes against the Bees, the England international was forced to leave the game and was replaced by Mateo Kovacic. It’s unclear if the 22-year-old was unable to continue or if the substitution was made out of caution.
Gallagher, who has played in eight Premier League games so far this year, is attempting to secure a spot in Chelsea’s starting lineup following a standout loan stint at Crystal Palace. In order to make Gareth Southgate’s England team, for the Qatar world cup, he would be required to stay fit and find his best form.
But, Gallagher would likely miss the World Cup along with teammates Reece James, N’Golo Kante, and Wesley Fofana if he is forced to sit out. Kante will also miss the World Cup campaign in Qatar due to a hamstring problem that will keep him sidelined until next year.
However, as per Football London, Chelsea would also be harmed by the prospect of losing the midfielder in such a crucial stretch of matches. The 22-year-old was excellent against Brentford until making his way out of the field.
Although Graham Potter shrugged off rumours that Gallagher will be unavailable for a long time, the manager will be concerned if the midfielder fails to start or make the bench against United. The Red Devils are in fine form as they comfortably defeated Tottenham on their home ground and the blues would vary of the threat and solidity possessed by United in the middle of the field.
It remains to be seen whether the English star would be able to make it to the starting XI against United. A win would help Chelsea maintain their position in the top four of the league table.
