Ex-Paris Saint-Germain skipper Thiago Silva has signed on for Chelsea FC on a one-year deal, with the center-back having an option to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge further by an additional year.
The 35-year old defender becomes Frank Lampard’s third signing in as many days after Ben Chilwell’s and Malang Sarr’s subsequent arrivals at the west London giants. Lampard had been pushing for a major restoration of the Blues’ defensive core after last season’s shambolic showings.
Rumors of Silva making the move to Chelsea FC had emerged prior to PSG’s UEFA Champions League final clash with Bayern Munich. With the Ligue 1 champions having turned down an opportunity to extend the Brazilian international’s deal, Silva was free to join another side ahead of the upcoming season.
Interest in signing the much-experienced center-back was rampant across Europe, with a number of clubs having enquired about the 35-year old’s availability this summer. However, the player was understood to have prioritized a move to the Blues.
Silva believes that despite his age, he remains capable of playing at the highest level for a couple of more years. With his arrival at Stamford Bridge, Frank Lampard’s side gains a world-class name in the former AC Milan man who would prove himself to a real leader for the Blues from the back.
