Chelsea have been pursuing Sterling’s signature since last month with the player having just one year left on his current terms at The Etihad and was open to a move away from the Premier League holders.
A push for wrapping up talks to sign the former Liverpool man is likely to have been made after a last-minute setback for the Stamford Bridge camp in their hopes to bring in Leeds United star forward Raphinha.
The Brazilian appears certain to join Barcelona this summer following the Catalan giants pipping Chelsea in the latter stages of the transfer development with the player and his agent Deco inclined towards making the move to Camp Nou.
