Chelsea is reportedly on the verge of signing Marc Guiu from Barcelona after activating the young striker’s £5m release clause, according to sources in Spain.
Guiu, 18, played his first game for Barcelona’s main team last year, netting two goals in seven games.
But, facing tough fights for a place in the top team, he ended up playing more with Barcelona B. There, Guiu hit six goals in 17 matches.
Guiu’s time with Barcelona B might have ended on Sunday after their defeat in the play-off for promotion to the Segunda Division.
Reports say Chelsea is ready to pay Guiu’s release clause, with a lot of talks happening now. Bayern Munich wants the skilled striker too, but Chelsea is ahead in the hunt to get him.
Guiu shone in his first big game for Barcelona last October, scoring soon after he came on to win the game 1-0 against Athletic Bilbao.
Xavi, Barcelona’s head coach, praised the young striker’s immediate influence on the match.
“Marc, a local kid, made a significant impact for us,” Xavi stated following Guiu’s remarkable debut.
Xavi has consistently shown his belief in young talent, highlighting his faith in academy players.

“I considered him because he has a natural goal-scoring ability, a certain spark, and I personally like him. I have no hesitation in turning to the academy.
On the contrary, I offer the same confidence that was given to me when I was 17 or 18 years old,” Xavi explained.
He added that young players like Gavi, Balde, Lamine, Fermin, and Guiu have a special spark and are eager to prove themselves.
