The hosts started on the front foot and Timo Werner had the first effort of the game which required Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to come into action.

Tuchel’s men had their lead soon which came from Trevor Chalobah, who on his return to the starting teamsheet, got himself at the end of a Ruben Loftus-Cheek header to find the back of the net.

Southampton then looked to up the pressure on the Blues in the hope of finding a leveller and they nearly did do the same when Theo Walcott was found by an inviting cross by Walker-Peters.

Timo Werner had his goal ruled out by VAR and in the following protests, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was booked with which the first half came to a close.

The start of the second half was not what Chelsea had expected as Ben Chilwell brought down Livramento inside the box which meant the visitors had a chance to make it 1-1 from the spot which James Ward-Prowse made no mistake in doing as he sent Mendy the wrong way.

Southampton’s goalscorer, however, was soon given the marching orders after a VAR check deemed his tackle on Jorginho worthy of a red card and following his sending off the hosts regained ground on course to seal the three points.

Timo Werner was the scorer to make it 2-1 for the Blues with the German making the most of Azpilicueta’s first time delivery into the box to get his effort past McCarthy.

Ben Chilwell joined in on the action in the dying embers of the game for Chelsea’s third and final goal with a spectacular volley which crossed the line according to the VAR check that followed up the effort.
