The hosts started on the front foot with Kenedy, handed a first league start in the Chelsea shirt since 2017, teeing up the returning Kai Havertz for the opening goal.

Watford then turned on the pressure with Thomas Tuchel’s men enduring a rough patch in the attacking third against Daniel Bachmann’s goal.

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was forced into action to deny Joao Pedro who got the better of an uninspired Chelsea backline as he looked to get his side back in the mix.

Ben Chilwell was brought off the bench following his long spell on the sidelines and the Chelsea supporters were in in full voice to welcome the England international wing-back.

The visitors, however, dealt a major blow to Chelsea with Adam Masina’s floating delivery into the box finding Gosling who made no mistake in his header to make it 1-1 with three minutes to time.

Ross Barkley came clutch in the dying embers of the game with the midfielder nodding home from close ranger after Reece James had sent in a cross from the edge of the box with the former’s effort ensuring the three points for the home side.
