Chelsea secured a convincing 2-0 win over French side Lille on Tuesday night in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 clash.
MATCH PROCEEDINGS
The home side got the game underway on the front foot and could have had an early opening goal to show for their dominance with Kai Havertz firing a half volley over the bar.
Havertz was once again on the target but Lille goalie Leo Jardim kept out the German’s effort. The resulting corner, however, gave Thomas Tuchel’s Blues the well-earned lead.
Hakim Ziyech’s delivery was met by the lurking Havertz and his strike found the back of the net with Jardim unable to make another important stop to keep his side in the affair.
Chances come thick and fast for Chelsea who had to deal with a concern on the injury front with midfield man Mateo Kovacic limping off the pitch to be replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Hakim Ziyech was another player for the hosts who had to be brought off with Saul Niguez his replacement as Chelsea were handed scares ahead of the forthcoming Carabao Cup final.
The second and final goal of the night was netted by the American winger Christian Pulisic with N’Golo Kante teeing up the former in spectacular fashion to rubber-stamp the win.
