Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by bitter rivals Manchester United in an evenly contested affair at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.
MATCH PROCEEDINGS
The home side fashioned a couple of early opportunities through on goal but Manchester United No.1 David de Gea was up to the task to deny Thomas Tuchel’s men.
Callum Hudson-Odoi went past Victor Lindelof to try his luck for the opener only for De Gea to put out a good save and keep the scoreline intact.
Antonio Rudiger had his fair share of involvement in the final third with the centre-back first nodding the ball wide from a Reece James pass and then rattling the crossbar after being set up by Hudson-Odoi.
Reece James was close from a free-kick just before half-time and De Gea was more than equal to keep out the valiant effort as both sides went into the interval at nil-nil.
Chelsea had a horrid start to the second period with Jorginho’s lapse of judgement allowing Jadon Sancho to race into the attacking half and slot his effort into the back of the net past Mendy.
With a little more than 20 minutes left to play for, Chelsea had a respite coming their way with Thiago Silva fouled in the box and a spot-kick awarded to the hosts which was tucked in by Jorginho.
The Blues had the final kick of the game to seal the win but Rudiger fired over his volley as the final whistle ensured a stalemate for the rivals.
