Chelsea lost out to Liverpool in Sunday’s Carabao Cup finals at Wembley with an intense penalty shootout deciding the outcome of the game.
MATCH PROCEEDINGS
Thomas Tuchel’s men enjoyed a flying start to the game and could have had an early lead through Chrisitan Pulisic who drew a save from Kelleher in the Liverpool goal.
Momentum shifted between the two teams on either end of the pitch and it was Liverpool who forced Edouard Mendy into action around the half-hour mark with an important double save.
Mason Mount had a brilliant chance coming his way just before the half time interval but the playmaker was unable to get his effort on target to trouble Kelleher.
Another effort through on goal for Chelsea in the opening minutes of the second period came through Mount who could only hit the post.
Thiago Silva produced a brilliant goal-line clearance to deny Mohamed Salah from finding the back of the net and when Liverpool found the opener through Joel Matip, a VAR check chalked off the goal with Virgil van Dijk offside in the build up.
Chelsea had as many as three goals ruled out for offside with Kai Havertz involved in two cases while substitute Romelu Lukaku’s strike was deemed offside by the thinnest of margins.
The penalty shootout that followed the 120 minutes of action saw none of the 11 Liverpool players miss from the spot while Chelsea’s 11th man to step up in Kepa sent his effort flying over the bar.
