Cesar Azpilicueta has triggered a one-year contract extension with Chelsea with the skipper likely to stay put at the Bridge beyond this coming summer.
There had been speculation doing the rounds over the Spaniard’s future in the English capital heading into the last leg of the campaign with Barcelona emerging the frontrunners to land the Chelsea captain.
According to a report from The Athletic, it is claimed that Azpilicueta’s contract extension was triggered following the veteran defender turning out in a certain number of games over the course of the season for Thomas Tuchel’s men.
Azpilicueta’s new deal is understood to be not impacted by the sanctions currently handed down to Chelsea in the aftermath of the Russian-Ukraine conflict which brought owner Roman Abramovich under the lens of the UK government.
It remains to be seen whether the Barcelona camp, under the newly appointed manager Xavi, would be keen on revisiting their longstanding interest in the Chelsea skipper Azpilicueta who is a top target for the Catalan giants.
