Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi has opened up on the Achilles injury he suffered last season – admitting he thought it could spell the end of his career.
The 18-year-old picked up the blow in a game against Burnley in April and missed out on the club’s Europa League final triumph against Arsenal – as well as England’s Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands.
He has since made a return from injury and has played four games since making his comeback from the sidelines. He made a goal-scoring return from injury by scoring in Chelsea’s 7-1 victory over Grimsby Town in the Carabao cup and also made his first start in the Premier League in the 4-1 win over Southampton last Sunday getting an assist.
But the youngster has conceded that it was initially difficult to imagine being back on the pitch during the ‘dark days’.
‘I wondered if I would be able to play again; that was my first thought,‘ he told Sky Sports. ‘I knew I’d done something really serious so I was really concerned. But my family kept me confident that I’d be back to how I was.
‘There were days when I would go into training and I would be sad or disappointed because I could see the boys outside training and you just want to be out there with them.
‘So I had the dark days but at the same time I had positive days as well.’
Hudson-Odoi was famously courted by Bayern Munich in the transfer window last January but has since signed a lucrative new contract which will keep him at the club until 2024 and is now looking forward to establishing himself in the first team.
