Despite Manchester City FC’s recent interest reported to be in signing Nathan Ake, Chelsea FC could hijack their transfer approach. Ake, who now plays for AFC Bournemouth, was earlier a Blues player. Upon selling the defender to The Cherries, Chelsea FC inserted a buy-back clause in his Bournemouth contract.
Pep Guardiola has been eager on signing a new center-back this summer for Manchester City FC. The Citizens have struggled to cope up with attacking threats from other top teams due to the woefulness of their present defense.
Veteran midfielder Fernandinho has looked out of sorts when played as a center-back. Moreover, Manchester City FC’s star defender Aymeric Laporte was sidelined for the majority of the 2019-20 season due to an injury. John Stones has struggled for form this season whereas Nicolas Otamendi is nearing the age of 33.
In such a scenario, Nathan Ake has been identified as an ideal addition to the Manchester City FC squad. The Dutc international has been impressive for The Cherries since signing for them in 2016. The 25-year old center-back is extremely calm on the ball and is a very versatile player.
With AFC Bournemouth sitting at the 18th position in the Premier League table, there is a strong possibility that The Cherries may be relegated to the Championship next season. However, if such an event does occur, Nathan Ake would be keen on leaving Eddie Howe’s side. The Cherries star winger Ryan Fraser has already confirmed that he would be departing Bournemouth in the summer.
Chelsea FC have also been on the hunt for a new center-back in recent weeks. RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano and Bayern Munich’s David Alaba have been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
It wouldn’t be the first time that the Blues hijack the transfer approach of another Premier League rival. Chelsea FC had famously overtaken Liverpool FC in their bid to sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig last month.
With Ake on the wish list for many top sides, Chelsea FC would have to fend off increasing competition to resign their former player. Signing Ake could be a big step towards challenging for the Premier League title for Frank Lampard and his Chelsea FC side.
