In a recent run of developments, Ben Chilwell is set to have his medical at Chelsea FC on Monday ahead of a move to Stamford Bridge, according to reports. The Blues are rumoured to have achieved a major breakthrough in negotiations with Leicester City over a deal for the 23-year old left-back.
Chilwell’s signing had been a primary target for Chelsea FC boss Frank Lampard ahead of next season. However, the Foxes had held out for a fee in the excess of £80 million to be offered by the Blues. As a result, there had been a significant halt in the ongoing negotiations between the two sides for quite some time.
But now it is being reported that Chelsea FC have agreed to give into Leicester City’s asking price for the English international. Lampard remains desperate to add quality defensive reinforcements to his squad after the Blues sustaining a crisis at the back in recent months. The 23-year old could arrive at Stamford Bridge in a world-record transfer fee paid for a defender, eclipsing the £80 million paid last summer for Harry Maguire by Manchester United.
Speculation had suggested that Manchester City too had expressed interest in making a move for Chilwell this summer. Pep Guardiola was believed to be wanting to sign the 23-year old full-back to fortify his defence for the upcoming season.
However, the Blues do remain in pole position to secure Chilwell’s signature despite interest from other top clubs in the left-back. The player himself is understood to be wanting to join Frank Lampard’s side in the hope of Champions League football.
