Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has emerged as a potential €60m transfer target for Barcelona and Chelsea, according to the latest reports.
Bentancur has been performing very well this season for Italian Champions Juventus and that has resulted in interest from some of the top European rival clubs. Injuries to key midfielders Emre Can and Sami Khedira have helped Bentancur gain more minutes under his belt and he has surely turned this opportunity into a regular spot in central midfield. 21-year-old Uruguayan has featured in 13 Serie A games and 3 Champions League fixtures, scoring 2 league goals in the process.
The Uruguayan has caught an eye of many fans with his cover to defense and contribution in midfield to keep possession. Following the departure of Claudio Marchisio to Zenit, Bentancur seems to take a role left by club icon. He is expected to feature regularly for the Old Lady from now on even when Khedira and Can returns.
Barcelona is not short of midfielders at the moment but it is only Sergio Busquets who can operate in deep-lying midfield as Arturo Vidal has failed to impress manager Ernesto Valverde since his arrival from Bayern Munich. Ivan Rakitic and Arthur are occupying an advanced role in midfield and Betancur’s versatility will be a bonus for the Catalan giants.
Premier League heavyweights Chelsea are also showing strong interest in the 21-year-old Bentancur but are also well equipped in the midfield department. Deep-lying players Ngolo Kante and Jorginho are proved consistent players so it is unlikely for Bentancur to join the West London club unless Sarri wants a permanent player for the on-loan Mateo Kovacic.
Chelsea could make a bid for Bentancur if Sarri wants Kante to play in a more advanced role as a box to box midfielder. At €60 million, with the performances that Bentancur is putting in for Juventus, he could be a steal for the Blues.
