Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta wished former manager Jose Mourinho all the best after he was appointed the Tottenham head coach following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino in what was a shock day for Spurs fans.
Azpilicueta played for Mourinho during the latter’s second spell in charge of Chelsea from 2013-15 and famously dislodged the long-time serving left-back Ashley Cole and made the left-back position his own as Chelsea romped to the Premier League title in the 2014-15 season.
However, things did not go smoothly the following season as The former Chelsea manager left in 2016 with the side lingering in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
He then went on to manage rivals Manchester United, a move which left a sour taste in the mouth of many Chelsea fans.
But Azpilicueta refused to talk negatively about his former boss, insisting he wants the Portuguese coach to do well with the Whites.
“I can talk only when Jose was here at Chelsea with us,” he told Sky Sports News.
“We won trophies, and now football moves on. I wish him all the best even though he goes to a rival.
“I have good memories with him and I have played many times under him and against him.
“Obviously when we play against each other we both want to win for our teams, but this is football. I wish him well.”
Chelsea faces a tough trip to the Etihad Stadium during the weekend to face Manchester City who will be looking to bounce back from their defeat against title rivals Liverpool while Mourinho’s first game in charge of Spurs will come against London club, West Ham, on Saturday.
