Chelsea’s veteran striker, Olivier Giroud scored a spectacular overhead goal that gave the Blues an outstanding away win against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last 16 first leg in Bucharest. Not only it was a big win for new manager Thomas Tuchel but Chelsea got the away goal advantage as well to progress to the quarter-finals.
Atletico coach, Diego Simeone’s defensive approach was tested by Tuchel’s more progressive style in playing and the Blues reaped the rewards as they took the win. Luis Suarez rarely troubled the Chelsea defense as Andreas Christensen shone in the absence of Thiago Silva in the centre of the back three.
Callum Hudson Odoi’s attitude may not impress Tuchel in the 1-1 draw against Southampton last Saturday, but he was the main threat from the right-hand side of the pitch against the Spanish giants.
Midfield duo, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho totally dictated the game and were far more compact than the Spanish side. Their excellent display put the Atletico under pressure as they grouped to defend any Blues’ attack.
Tuchel’s side is the favourite to reach the next round but it will be very difficult as well after Jorginho getting suspended for the 2nd leg. But nevertheless, Simeone’s side can’t be written off as they have been dominant in the league and players like Suarez, Joao Felix can fire with all cylinders in the do-or-die return leg match at Stamford Bridge.
