Chelsea survived a scare in the opening stages of the game when Danny Ings was stopped in his tracks by midfielder Mateo Kovacic after a high ball was played into the former’s path.

A moment of defensive misjudgment from the hosts allowed Chelsea to open the scoring as Tyrone Mings was at fault with his header and Mount made no mistake in finding the back of the net.

Villa sought to increase the pressure going forward and Leon Bailey came the closest to scoring with his effort hitting the woodwork while Kepa was called into action time and again.

Ings forced a great save out of the Chelsea goalkeeper before the break and Sterling struck the crossbar following a lovely move by the Chelsea front line.

A free-kick in a dangerous position in the second period was Chelsea’s key to doubling their advantage with Mount stepping up and scoring, wrong-footing the goalkeeper in the process.

It could well have been 3-0 for the visitors in the final moments when Gallagher teed up Sterling whose header was just wide of the goal.
