Chelsea lost to Arsenal in a 3-1 scoreline in the Emirates Stadium to give Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta his first league victory after two months of struggling. The players who scored for the Gunners were Alexandre Lacazette, Granit Xhaka, and Bukayo Saka- who not only gave their coach a lifeline but also moved their position away from the relegation zone.
It was a disappointing and dull performance from the Blues whose defense was frequently threatened by the pace of Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli of Arsenal. They had their backs on the wall and they were hungry to turn it around whereas Chelsea won 3-0 against West Ham after losing two games in a row.
The first lead came when Reece James fouled Kieran Tierney in the penalty box in the 35th minute of the game. Lacazette made no mistake to convert the penalty as he sent Mendy in the wrong way to make it 1-0. The match became much worse for Chelsea when Xhaka scored from an incredible free-kick which was beyond the reach of the Blues’ keeper.
Frank Lampard desperately tried to turn around the match in half-time as he sent Callum Hudson-Odoi in place of Werner and replaced Jorginho with Mateo Kovacic.
This just improved the game for the Blues slightly but was not enough to make a comeback. Arsenal took complete control of the match by Saka put a lob that went inside the goal striking the post in the 56th minute to make it 3-0.
But late in the match when everyone thought it was settled, Chelsea got two penalties- one that was converted by Tammy Abraham and the second was missed by Jorginho. The match could have been ended in a tense situation but the missed penalty put the match to the bed to a 3-1 scoreline.
