Ballon d’Or winner. Luka Modric believes that Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will help get the best out of Mateo Kovacic.
Modric’s compatriot, Kovacic has impressed since making the move to Stamford Bridge in 2018 from Real Madrid. His terrific display in midfield named him as the Chelsea fans’ Player of the Season for the last campaign.
The Croatian international is keen to improve in front of goal having scored just twice in 98 appearances for Chelsea. But Modric backs his compatriot to improve under Lampard’s guidance.
“He was a bit obsessed about not scoring goals,” Modric said.
“But I tell him to just relax and not think about it and that goal will come suddenly and it will open his account.”
‘It is normal for a midfielder to want to score goals, but now he has scored and in future hopefully, he will score more, but hopefully, it won’t take two years! I am sure it will not.
“He just needs to think about how to help the team and impose his game on the pitch and if goals come it is a big plus, he does not need to be obsessed,” the Real Madrid midfielder added.
Modric is a big fan of Lampard and acknowledges his greatness.
“I think he can improve, and what is important for him is that he has a coach [Lampard] who was one of the best midfielders in England and under him, he can grow even more,” said Modric on his ex-Real Madrid teammate.
He started for Croatia in their UEFA Nations League clash against France. The midfielder found himself up against club teammates Olivier Giroud and N’Golo Kante.

Croatia lost the match but Kovacic caught the attention of everyone with his stellar performance.
Kovacic will expect his name in the starting XI of Chelsea for the new season’s first match against Brighton. Another important season is about to commence and Kovacic will have to work even more hard to be a consistent name in the team sheet.
