Chelsea FC were thought to have a difficult season when they were slapped with a transfer ban coupled with the departure of Eden Hazard. But the London club has done well under the guidance of club legend and all-time top scorer, Frank Lampard. Chelsea didn’t win silverware this season, but with inexperienced players, the Blues have done well with a fourth-place finish in the Premier League.
The likes of Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic have done well to give Chelsea Champions League football next season. Lampard and his side have been under constant scrutiny due to the profile of the club, but haven’t succumbed under pressure. With the help of some standout performances, Chelsea were able to get to the final of the FA Cup and the Round-of-16 in the Champions League.
Let us have a look at the possible players who could be awarded as Chelsea’s Player of the Season 2019/20.
Frank Lampard had already managed Chelsea academy graduate Mason Mount, in his stint with Derby County. Lampard brought back Mount from Derby along with him and the young Englishman hasn’t disappointed a bit and has played all but one game in the league. Mount has featured in all the other 37 games in the Premier League in which he has scored seven goals and six assists.
Mount has been Mr Dependable for Lampard this season, as the 21-year old has played in several positions this season. He played as an attacking midfielder, a central midfielder and also as a left-winger in the Premier League. In all competitions, Mount has played a whopping 53 games for the Blue this season, which is a testimony of Lampard’s trust in the player.
Despite Chelsea getting a lot of signings, Mount will be expected to keep his spot in the starting XI next season.
Despite Chelsea’s transfer ban, the club was allowed to make Kovacic’s signing permanent, as he was on-loan from Real Madrid the previous season. Kovacic has rejuvenated his career at London and has turned out to become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. The mesmeric dribbler has also become a controller of the midfield, who can dictate play for Chelsea and drive the team forward.
Kovacic’s consistency and improvement have also meant that Chelsea haven’t missed Ngolo Kante a lot, as the latter was out with injury. The Croatian midfielder has played 31 games in the Premier League in which he has scored one goal and has provided three assists. The 26-year old has played a total of 47 games this season which shows his fitness and importance in a squad full of talented midfielders.
Kovacic is arguably the most consistent player of the season, and Lampard would’ve been happy for Chelsea to sign Kovacic permanently.
Chelsea’s only signing of the last summer transfer window, Christian Pulisic has done well in his first season in the Premier League. The American has faced several injuries in his first season at England, but whenever he has been on the pitch, he has produced. The winger was labelled as the replacement of Eden Hazard, which shows the amount of pressure Pulisic is under.
Despite injuries, Pulisic has featured in 25 Premier League games last season, in which he scored nine goals and provided six assists. He was untouchable since the restart and provided the much-needed pace and energy down the left-wing for Chelsea. Captain America, as he is nicknamed, suffered an injury in the FA Cup final against Arsenal and might miss the start of the next season.
But coming from Germany with the price tag and the expectations as Hazard’s replacement, Pulisic has done exceptionally well in his first season at Chelsea.
