Chelsea FC starlet Mason Mount has opened up in detail about his journey at the Stamford Bridge outfit. The English international has been associated with the Blues since a tender age of six and has come up through the youth ranks to emerge as a first-team starter for Frank Lampard this past season.
However, the path towards greatness for Mount at the West London-based Premier League club has not always been an easy one. The 21-year old admitted that he had considered his future at Chelsea FC upon turning 14 years old, in a recent interview to the club’s website.
‘My dad always had questions [about staying at Chelsea] because there weren’t all that many young players coming through into the first team. JT [John Terry] was the only one who really came through and had an unbelievable career.
The departure of Declan Rice, an ex-Blues academy player and current West Ham United midfielder, was believed to a major setback to Mount. Both players are known to have an extremely close relationship with each other, having played together at the youth level since the age of six.
‘When Dec left it did affect me a lot at the time. I knew as one of my closest friends that that wouldn’t be the end of him and he would work as hard as he could to get where he is.
However, the midfielder chose to stay put at the Blues despite a number of his longtime friends leaving the club. Mount was subsequently loaned out to Dutch side Vitesse and Championship outfit Derby County before he made a major impact for Chelsea FC last season.
‘I always believed that I would make it to the first team though, through hard work and determination and I didn’t let anybody get in the way of my focus, even my dad when he had questions.
The 21-year old has certainly been a wonderful player for Frank Lampard’s side across the Blues’ 2019-20 league campaign. Mount filled in for the often-injured N’Golo Kante at the centre of the park for Chelsea FC and established his credentials as a future Blues midfield maestro with his consistent run of form.
