Atletico Madrid’s Champions League exit intensifies Chelsea’s Transfer Business

Following Atletico Madrid’s Champions League exit after a 2-1 loss to Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig yesterday, Chelsea FC could hope to ramp up their pursuit for the duo of Jan Oblak and Jose Gimenez this summer.

Both players have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge ahead of next season. With Frank Lampard’s side reeling with significant defensive woes, the Chelsea FC boss is hopeful that the signings of the Atletico pairing would help fortify the club’s backline.

The 27-year old Oblak is believed to be Lampard’s ideal target replacement for the out-of-favor Chelsea No.1 Kepa. With the latter most certainly on the way out of Stamford Bridge, Lampard is hoping to secure Oblak’s signing. The Slovenian international would be a major upgrade on the 25-year old Kepa between the sticks for the Blues.

On the other hand, Gimenez too has been rumored to be on Lampard’s shortlist this summer. The 25-year old center-back’s arrival at Chelsea FC would be a massive boost for the club. He has earned the mantle of being a leader on the pitch besides being a strong presence in the air at the back.

Oblak’s recent comments did suggest the possibility of him seeking an exit from Diego Simeone’s side. The shot-stopper had refused to rule out a move away from Atletico amid strong Chelsea FC transfer rumors.
