Tottenham Hotspurs and FC Barcelona amp up interest in Willian

Tottenham Hotspurs are being considered favourites to land the transfer of soon to be free agent Willian. The Brazilian’s contract with the Blues is set to expire at the end of the 2019-20 Premier League campaign. Willian’s future at Stamford Bridge remains uncertain amidst talks of a new deal with the Blues unable to materialize.

The 31-year old attacker has been a key player for Frank Lampard’s side this season. Willian has displayed great form for the west London based club post lockdown period, with the Brazilian international scoring four goals and recording three assists in the process.

However, Chelsea FC are unable to finalize contractual negotiations with the player over a new deal. It is reported that Willian wants to extend his stay at the club until 2024. On the other hand, the Blues are only willing to offer a two-year contract extension to the 31-year old.

Jose Mourinho, who is now the manager of Tottenham Hotspurs, is eager on securing Willian’s signing following the expiry of his Chelsea FC contract. Mourinho had previously coached Willian during the Portuguese manager’s stint at Chelsea FC. And it seems as if the now Spurs boss would not want to miss out on the chance to sign his former player for free.

Besides interest from Spurs, several other clubs are also vying for Willian’s signature. Tottenham Hotspurs’ arch rivals Arsenal FC were also rumoured to be a strong favourite to sign the Chelsea FC winger.

Spanish giants FC Barcelona have been linked with a move for Willian for nearly three years. However, a deal involving the Brazilian could never be finalized by the Blaugrana. But with the 31-year old now being available for free, FC Barcelona might attempt to sign the attacker.

The La Liga side are facing a shortage of first-team attacking options in their current squad. Frenchman Ousmane Dembele has been on the sidelines for the majority of the campaign, and the ageing Luis Suarez has often misfired for the Blaugrana in recent times. In such a scenario, Willian’s signing could be a great addition to the Spanish club.
