Tammy Abraham’s current contract with Chelsea FC has been extended until 2023. The 22-year old striker’s previous deal with the Blues ran until 2022. The one-year contract extension was activated upon Abraham reaching a specific number of goals and a certain number of appearances for the west London based Premier League side.
Abraham’s contract had been the source of speculation in recent weeks. Chelsea FC boss Frank Lampard had publicly advised the young forward to focus more on his playing form, rather than on his contractual negotiations with the Blues. The 22-year old English international’s previous contract made him a transfer target for other sides in the Premier League.
However, despite Abraham’s stay at Stamford Bridge being extended by up to one more year, Chelsea FC will still attempt to tie down the striker for a longer period at the club. The Blues’ management is keen on Abraham signing a long-term contract extension at the end of the current season.
Lampard refused to go into further details about his player’s contract extension clause. The Blues coach stated that the striker still had a long way to go at the club. Moreover, Abraham’s performances on the pitch should be his main priority, according to Lampard.
The 22-year old English international had been on a goal drought for Chelsea FC till earlier this week. Before scoring the third goal for the Blues against Crystal Palace on Tuesday, Abraham had failed to score a goal since 11th January.
The striker’s horrid run of form came after a brilliant start to the campaign for the Chelsea FC youngster. Abraham was in terrific form for the Blues in the first half of the 2019-20 Premier League season with him racking up 12 goals till the end of last year.
The Blues’ striker is still his side’s top scorer in the Premier League this season, with 14 goals to his name. However, recent weeks have seen Lampard preferring to start Olivier Giroud over Abraham as the first-choice striking option for Chelsea FC.
