Here’s a look at some facts about Chelsea’s new German import:

1)  A born Goalscorer

Timo Werner was born on 6th March 1996, in the Bad Constatt district of Stuttgart. His father, Günter Schuh was an amateur footballer and coach.

Timo joined the VfB Stuttgart academy at the age of six. He performed exceptionally at all youth levels and was promoted to the U-19 side at the age of 16. In the 2012-13 U-19 season, he scored 24 goals and won the Gold U17 Fritz Walter Medal for his outstanding performances.

He was subsequently promoted to the senior team for the following season.

2) A record breaker from the start

On August 1, 2013 Timo Werner made his debut and became the youngest player in Stuttgart’s history play a competitive match for them.

He played in the Europa League qualifying round match against Bulgaria’s PFC Botev Plovdiv. He was 17 years, 4 months and 25 days old on that day. In the following weeks, he also set new records as the youngest player to play for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga and DfB Pokal.

He become Stuttgart’s youngest ever goalscorer when he scored against Eintracht Frankfurt. And on 10 November 2013, he became the youngest player in Bundesliga history to score 2 goals in a game, when he netted twice in a 3-1 win over SC Freiburg.

3) Became a key member of the Stuttgart squad in 2018

After setting off to a record breaking start in his first season, Werner became a key member of the Stuttgart squad. He signed a professional contract with them, extending up to June 2018, on his 18th birthday. He scored 13 goals in 95 games in his time at Stuttgart.

Stuttgart was relegated in 2016, which lead Timo to move to RB Leipzig for a reported fee of 10 million euros, which was the largest in the club history then. He hit the ground running and became a very important player for Leipzig.

4) Represented five levels at German National Team

Timo Werner has represented Germany at the U15, U16, U17, U19 and U21 levels, scoring 34 goals in 48 matches overall. In 2010, he scored a hat-trick against Poland on his debut for the German U15 team. Werner was a part of the German U17 team, that finished Runners-up in the 2012 UEFA under-17 European Championship.

In 2017, he made his first appearance for the German National team in a friendly against England. He played a key role in Germany’s FIFA Confederations Cup win in 2017. He scored 3 goals and made 2 assists in the tournament.

5) First youngest player to make 50, 100, 150 and 200 Bundesliga appearances

Timo Werner set the record for being the youngest player to make 50, 100, 150 and 200 Bundesliga appearances. His record for 50 and 100appearances was later broken by Kai Havertz of Bayer Leverkusen.

Other records

He also won the Fritz Walter Medal, once the gold for U17 and silver for U19. He also won the Golden Boot in the FIFA Confederations Cup, as he finished the tournament as the highest scorer with 3 goals. In his last game for RB Leipzig in June 27, 2020, Timo Werner scored a brace to become RB Leipzig’s all time top goalscorer with 95 goals.

6) Has an interesting transfer saga

It was clear in early 2020 that Timo Werner will leave RB Leipzig in the summer. And with his talent and goal scoring abilities, many top clubs were looking to get him signed.

But according to most of the football newspapers, Liverpool were the clear favorites, and were most likely to sign him. Werner’s pace is well suited to Liverpool’s style, and Liverpool looking to strengthen their squad, Liverpool looked like Werner’s future home.

And after months of speculation and rumors linking him to a move to Liverpool, the news of him joining Chelsea broke out on June 18, 2020. Though he was a fantastic signing for Chelsea, everyone was surprised to see him sign for them, as he was linked to Liverpool for a long time. Chelsea signed Werner for 47.5 million pounds on a five year deal.

7) Nicknamed as “Turbo Timo”

Werner was nicknamed ‘Turbo Timo’ by the media when he burst on the scene. He was a fast striker who gave defenders who were marking him a very hard time. He has since been recorded to cover 100m in 11.1 seconds . Werner has attributed his pace to his running endeavors with his father when he was a kid.
