Chelsea FC striker Olivier Giroud has insisted that he is not fazed by Timo Werner’s arrival at Stamford Bridge.
Werner’s transfer was officially confirmed by the Blues a few days back, with the German striker set to join his new Chelsea FC teammates at the end of the current Bundesliga season.
The impending arrival of Werner would mean that Giroud will be challenged for the first-choice striker spot.
Till now, Giroud has been able to fend off competition from young English international Tammy Abraham for the Blue striking duties. However, Werner has established his credentials of being of the deadliest strikers in front of the goal.
Giroud stated that the arrival of Werner will be a positive influence on the present Chelsea FC attackers. The World-Cup winning star also added that he was not afraid of the competition posed by the 24-year old Leipzig striker.
The French international also added that the addition of Werner would act as motivation for the entire Blues squad. According to Giroud, players would not stay in their respective comfort zones when their places in the starting lineup are under threat from others.
Werner brings with himself a reputation of being a brilliant goal scorer wherever he plays. The 24 year old is a traditional striker, however, he can also operate as a winger when required. Werner has excelled in his spell at RB Leipzig over the past four seasons.
The German international has scored 32 goals so far this campaign for the Bundesliga outfit Leipzig. His exploits in front of goal are the major reason for Leipzig’s largely successful domestic season.
On the other hand, Giroud has struggled for playing opportunities under new Chelsea FC manager Frank Lampard.
The 33-year old striker has started just six Premier League games this season for the Blues. However, the former Arsenal man has troubled opposition defences on the limited opportunities he has got so far.
The French international was very close to leaving Chelsea FC earlier this year in the January transfer window. However, on Lampard’s insistence, Giroud extended his contract further by one year. The Frenchman will certainly hope for more time on the pitch in the coming time for the Blues.
