Former Chelsea left-back who is also the youth coach at the club has urged the blues to go all out to sign Leicester City full-back Ben Chilwell.
Chelsea was given the all-clear to sign players again last week after their FIFA-imposed transfer ban was lifted and it is thought Chilwell is a target, along with England team-mate Jadon Sancho.
Marcos Alonso, Emerson and even right-back Cesar Azpilicueta have been rotated in that role this season, and the 22-year-old Foxes star is seen as the perfect man to claim the problem position long-term.
Chilwell has had a standout season for Leicester who is currently flying in the Premier League and currently sit second in the Premier League, while he’s also impressed on England duty since debuting last year.
Regarded as one of the finest left-backs of his generation, Cole – now a coach in Chelsea’s academy – certainly knows a good player when he sees one.
There’s always going to be a question mark if you’re going to a bigger club. He (Chilwell) is doing really well in terms of how he’s playing at Leicester. He’s enjoying the way Brendan (Rodgers) plays and the system. He’s got that license to attack.
‘I would love to see him here. I think he’s a quality player. I’ve heard he’s a Chelsea fan. But it depends on whether he wants to leave Leicester or if they’ll sell him. But in terms of quality, he’s got that.
‘If you buy a player you’ve got another three here you need to keep happy or sell. It’s a big decision but quality-wise for sure, he is good enough. When he’s played for England he’s played well. He got three assists last month. He’s shown quality both on the ball and off it. You can tell he likes to defend.’
Chelsea will face competition for Chilwell’s signature with reports saying that Manchester City and their city rivals Manchester United are also interested in the left-back. Chilwell will be committed to Leicester who is looking to push Liverpool all the way to the title this season.
