Former Chelsea boss and current Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he is unconcerned by Chelsea’s transfer ban being lifted and believes his former club may struggle to strengthen their team even with a “multi-million budget”.
It was revealed on Friday the original two-window ban handed to the Blues by FIFA, in relation to the signing of overseas youngsters would be halved to one by the CAS. As the club already served this over the summer, it means there are no longer any restrictions.
And as such, Chelsea can now add to their squad if they wish when the winter transfer window opens in a couple of weeks.
However, Mourinho who won three Premier League titles with Chelsea across two spells has said that Chelsea will struggle to get better players than they already have at the moment.
“I’m not worried about that. First of all, I’m not looking to the distance we have to Chelsea,” said Mourinho. “Between us and Chelsea there are still two or three teams, so you cannot look so high and so far at this moment.
“The second situation is for me that it’s not easy to get better players than they have – they have very good players.
“I don’t think even with a ban or even with a hypothetical multi-million budget to spend, I’m not very, very sure they can get much better players than they have.”
Mourinho’s Tottenham is currently nine points behind their top-four rivals in the battle for Champions League qualification and the club suffered their first defeat since Mourinho succeeded Mauricio Pochettino when Spurs were beaten 2-1 at Manchester United on Wednesday evening.
