John Terry speaks out about claims he blocked Aguero transfer

Former Chelsea defender John Terry has dismissed claims he urged Chelsea not to sign Sergio Aguero before his move to Manchester City.

The Athletic published an interesting article recently, which claimed that the Blues were keen to sign the striker while he was still at Atletico Madrid and even made a £30 million (€35m/$38m) offer for the Argentine in early 2010. However, John Terry wasn’t a huge fan of the Argentine and convinced the club not to sign the striker.

Terry who came through the youth academy at Chelsea and played for the club from 1998 to 2017 before leaving to end his playing career at Aston Villa where he is currently the assistant manager was quick to respond to these claims.

In a post on his Instagram story, he wrote: “Where do these get the stories from?

“If they bothered calling players’ agents it would solve an awful lot of nonsense.”

Despite Chelsea’s initial interest and Aguero’s own stance, no move would materialize with City instead of signing him in 2011.

The Argentine is now into his ninth season at the Etihad and has played a major role in the club claiming four Premier League titles during that time. He also netted Manchester City’s most famous goal when he scored a goal against QPR in stoppage time to seal the win on the final weekend of the Premier League season and pip rivals Manchester United to the Premier League title.

Aguero will get another opportunity to highlight the error Chelsea made in not signing him when the two sides meet at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
