Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham is reportedly close agreeing on a new contract at the club worth £100,000-a-week after his splendid start to the season.
Abraham’s current deal expires in 2022, but Chelsea is keen to reward his impressive form as he looks to cement himself as the club’s leading frontman.
The 22-year-old has spearheaded a young Chelsea team brilliantly so far this campaign and is currently joint top of the scoring charts in the Premier League alongside Manchester City star Sergio Aguero.
His stunning start to the season has seen him earn a recall to Gareth Southgate’s England squad and is seen as the backup striker to captain Harry Kane.
Chelsea is keen to tie their young English stars to long term deals and have already tied down Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi to long term deals this season.
Fikayo Tomori, Ross Barkley, Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham all started Saturday’s win at Stamford Bridge, the first time since 2013 five English players made the London club’s starting XI.
But its Abraham who has stolen the headlines with eight goals in nine league appearances and the opener in Chelsea’s 2-1 win in Lille, and Lampard called the 22-year-old a “sponge” for his capacity to learn.
Abraham is likely to start upfront for Chelsea when they take on last year’s semi-finalists Ajax on Wednesday looking for their second win in the Champions League. Chelsea lost their first game against Valencia but did well to beat Lille away from home. A win against Ajax would put them in a good position to qualify from the group.
