Reece James pulls out of England U21 squad due to injury

Chelsea defender Reece James has withdrawn from the England Under-21 squad because of injury. Reece James was supposed to be a part of the group that flew to Slovenia for a friendly fixture.

The 19-year-old will now return to Stamford Bridge, where he has just returned from an ankle injury that he picked up while on international duty with Aidy Boothroyd’s men during the summer.

Trevor Chalobah who is currently on loan at Championship club Huddersfield from Chelsea was another player to pull out of the squad due to injury.

Chelsea will be hoping that James’ injury is not serious after he finally was given an opportunity in the first team.

The full-back has been an unused substitute for the last two Premier League games after making his comeback in the Carabao Cup win over Grimsby Town last month.

The 19-year-old has also started the Champions League win against Lille at the start of October.

The Academy graduate is highly rated by the club and was tipped to dislodge Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta from the right-back position and make it his own after he impressed on loan at Championship side Wigan Athletic last season picking up the club’s player of the year award at the end of the season

Chelsea has experienced a change of scene this season after they were unable to sign players in the summer transfer window due to a transfer ban which meant that several academy graduates are being given an opportunity in the first team this season.

Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, and Fikayo Tomori have all impressed this season earning a call up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate.
