Former Liverpool star Don Hutchison has urged Chelsea boss Frank Lampard to drop Willian and play Christian Pulisic for the youngster to receive more game time.
The Blues signed Pulisic before their transfer ban came into place, spending £58million on the American youngster in the January transfer window from but the 21-year-old forward spent the remainder of last season back on loan at Borussia Dortmund before joining the Chelsea this summer transfer window.
But Pulisic, who has been dubbed as Eden Hazard’s long-term replacement at Stamford Bridge has failed to hit the ground running since arriving in the English capital. The American attacker was left on the bench for Chelsea’s last two Premier League games and did not even feature during the Champions League tie with Valencia last week.
Lampard has preferred to use Brazilian winger Willian instead of Pulisic on the flanks but football pundit Don Hutchison has explained that Pulisic might need some more football in order to get used to the pace and nature of his new surroundings.
While speaking to ESPN, the 48-year-old Scotsman said that he was impressed by Pulisic in the Bundesliga as well as the UEFA Super Cup game against Liverpool last month, “I’ve commentated on Christian Pulisic a number of times at Dortmund and I was at the Super Cup the other month. If you take away Kante, Pulisic was probably the best player on the pitch. In my opinion, he has to play. He’s a sensational player going forward. Maybe Frank thinks he’s not strong enough for the Premier League.”
Hutchison also went on to explain that the 41-year-old Lampard should drop Willian instead and play Pulisic, “In my opinion, if I was Frank, I would play him. Willian’s not pulling up any trees at the moment. I think Christian Pulsiic is a better player. I’m not sitting here saying he’s as good as Hazard, but he’s got a low center of gravity, he can take players on, I think he’s a game-changer.”
