Frank Lampard’s Chelsea was 2-0 up and cruising by half-time after striker Tammy Abraham struck twice in the first period, but Kurt Zouma’s late own goal ensured a draw after Callum Robinson’s strike in the first minute of the second half at Stamford Bridge on Saturday in the Premier League.
The draw puts the Sheffield United, who finished second in the Championship last season, into eighth place in the Premier League table, one spot above Chelsea.
Sheffield United goalkeeper Dean Henderson spilled a save when under pressure from Christian Pulisic and that gave Abraham the chance for his first of the evening, and a mistake in the visitor’s backline allowed the Chelsea attacker the opportunity for his second.
However, a spirited Sheffield United struck back in the first minute of the second half when Robinson, who had missed from close range in the first period, scored his first goal for the newly-promoted side since joining the club from Preston in the summer.
The hosts struggled to threaten after Henderson made a brilliant save in the second half to deny Abraham a hat-trick and couldn’t really get a grip of the game.
This allowed United to mount up the pressure on the Chelsea goal in the final few stages and they pulled level after 89 minutes when Robinson’s cross towards substitute Lys Mousset was diverted into his own net by the unlucky French defender Kurt Zouma, to leave Frank Lampard still searching for a first home win since he became Chelsea manager.
It was the second draw of the season for Chelsea in the Premier League at home and Lampard has to find a way to start getting all three points at home.
